Love this book! I first read it as a child. I was a California kid and this book gave me a huge desire to live in New York. I never did, but did get to that coast. I'm now in my 70s and I've read all of the Melendy books again over the years and continued to love them. Also, being an only child, I've the relationship of the four siblings. I was thrill to find it on Kindle do have added them there so if I wake in the night and can't sleep, I can easily mentally wander into this charming world of the four Melendys and fall asleep with sweet dreams.

The Saturdays Elizabeth Enright 9780805070606 Books Reviews

I loved this book as a child, and gave it to my first grade daughter to read over our week-long vacation. I ended up reading it to both my girls (ages 5 and 7) in the evenings in installments and they really loved it. It's fun for adults, too, because it is set in Manhattan in the late 40s, and the author paints a very vivid and ideal picture of how exciting and free it must have been. Each child has his or her own solitary adventure in the city on consecutive Saturdays and roams the city in a way that kids just can't do anymore. It's a great book for a child who reads above his or her grade level, but is still too young for books that are just a little too mature in subject matter. The Saturdays is a fascinating and exciting book for kids who would love to take off on a bike and explore on their own and not come home till dinner.
I just read this to my grandson, eight-years-old-almost-nine, on Skype. He loved it and couldn't believe it when we reached the last page. If a child is reading on his or her own, it is around the fifth grade level. But the story is gentle enough for younger kids. I am going to order the quartet and Gone Away Lake. I'd forgotten how much I loved Elizabeth Enright's stories as a child. The Melendy's were who I wanted to be! And my grandson and I discussed many things while reading this modern versus 1939 language (Gee whiz!), middle management (Cuffy!), wearing perfume (not too much!), and the circus! Enjoy!
I read this early 1950s when it was HARD to read, an early chapter book for me and I LOVED it then. I enjoyed it again as an old lady.
My ten year old daughter loved this book! I'm always looking for books for her that don't have snotty kids and tweens as the main character. This classic is good wholesome reading for her.
I am in my 50's, and just recently discovered this delightful book--plus the other 3 Melendy Quartet books in the set. Light reading, fun. These stories are the adventures of 4 siblings, their father, beloved housekeeper, and handyman. Takes you back to an earlier time in the mid-1900's, a time when kids didn't have all the electronic stuff they do now, a time when kids were kids and made their own creative fun. Love it! Can't wait for my grandkids to read these stories.
I remember checking this book out from the library as a young girl. The entire Melendy Family books were all in one "gigantic" anthology. I remember being captivated by their adventures - and maybe even having a little crush on Rush. The stories hold up and are just as wonderful today. I would highly recommend this to you - especially good for a chapter at bedtime for enjoyable family reading!
We chose to read the Saturdays as a part of our Parent/child book club. I was quite surprised at the content. I particularly enjoyed the fact that it was written in the 1940s and the lexicon and experiences reflect the it. I thoroughly enjoyed going on this journey with the Melendy Children, their nanny, and Father on a series of 8 saturdays in their lives. I really recommend this for either a read aloud book to your younger children, or a collaborative read with your child. Very clean, family friendly read. Cannot wait to see what book two brings.
