Mona Lisa Awakening Monere Children of the Moon Book 1 Sunny Books
Lisa, Mona Lisa, is working in a hospital as a nurse. She uses her abilities to sense what ails people to help the medical staff and the patients. One evening she senses a slower heartbeat and a great power in the ER. Knowing she is different from those around her is one thing. Discovering she is barely human is something else. And the revelations pour in fast after that. Matriarchal society, abilities, guards, territories and more and more start piling up on her plate.Spoiler alert for content below:
Tribute to LKH or rip off? I had read the reviews before reading this as I didn't want to pay for a hook that would essentially be a reread of another author. I heard mention of Bishop, too, but I can't attest as I've not read any of hers. But the LKH references were so many it was ridiculous. The story wasn't bad but it was like remembering a couple series and getting them mixed up because it has been a while since you'd read them.
*Lisa's mom was basically Merry's aunt from the MG series.
*Prince Holycon(spelling?) is King Sholto from MG.
*Gryffin in a watered form Jean-Claude from AB series.
*Amber is sort of a Gabriel/Richard mishmash from AB.
*Lisa has a cat form, AB series.
*Healing with, um, bedroom activities, a la AB series.
*The territory thing kind of reminds me of True Blood, actually lol.
There's a lot more but those are a few off the top of my head. As I said, it wasn't bad. It was just more like vaguely remembering 2 (or more according to Bishop fans) series and combining them in your head. Mona Lisa wasn't a bad character or unlikable, although she did evolve from her human mindset to 'other' very quickly. She wavered between more modern speech and a more ancient speech patterns a lot, too. Sometimes even within a single paragraph. In a single evening she went from sweet and helpful to very nearly bloodthirsty from just meeting a moonie. Her term for their people which I found hysterical and endearing. My very real complaint on the whole book is this: for a matriarchal society, where women are supposed to be revered and protected, there is a great deal of rape/attempted rape. So definitely some trigger warnings for that. It's mentioned as a part of a (few?) character's past as well as happens more than once in the story.

Mona Lisa Awakening Monere Children of the Moon Book 1 Sunny Books Reviews
I'd give it 4.5 stars if allowed half stars. It had a good story and some good characters which is unusual for erotica. I plan to read more of this series. Story brief The Monere people have powers and magic abilities humans don't have. The Monere live among humans, but humans don't know they are different. Queens rule territories. Mona Lisa was part Monere and part human and was left in an orphanage at birth. When she is 21, she meets Gryphon and realizes an unusual power exists between them. She stays with him and starts learning of the Monere world and is later accepted as one of the queens. She is in danger several times during the story. I enjoyed the side story about Prince Halcyon. I was surprised with the relationships Mona Lisa eventually had with Gryphon, Amber and Halcyon. I found that creative. I don't want to spoil anything, so I won't go into any more detail. Sexual language strong. Number of sex scenes ten. There are some references to rape and one semi-graphic rape scene. Setting current day New York City and Bennington, Minnesota. Genre erotica and paranormal romance.
Great story line because you'll want to read all four in the series. Don't forget that the novella within the series is in another book entirely. That book is 'On the Prowl' from Berkley Books in NY. There are four novellas (short stories) and Sunny's (the author) is the last in the book.
Although I read the other reviews saying the whole series is a knock off...its a good knock off. I don't mind much since I haven't personally read the other series people are comparing it to, but I really liked this book. It had enough sensual tention to kee me going and the story was knitted together nicely. Sometimes the speech felt forced and the story line had a few irrational moments. But all in all it was good. I would recommend it to friends who are into the genre but also to women who just need a good hot quick read. Don't we all sometimes? I'm excited to see how this story develops.
I was very disappointed in this book. Sadly, this felt more like fan fiction then a real novel. The Author took no time to let the story unfold, letting us learn more about the characters and grow to love them. Her writing was empty and boring. Although the story was a fun idea it felt like a rip off from the later cheesy Laurell Hamilton series. The story was rushed as if the Author only wrote what she wanted and didn't take the time to craft a real story. What should have happened in four books was crammed into one. Every now and then there were beautifully written passages, showing the potential of a true writer. However this will only happen if the stories are very critically edited and redone. Most of the meat of the story was left out leaving the pretty trimmings which doesn't make a whole meal. I also thought the Author's blurb in the back of the book saying how she was a good writer was very presumptuous and in poor taste. I am honestly dumbounded how this story got published and can only hope her other books are an improvement.
To be fair, the reasons why are twofold. One- the protagonist is lusty from the start. Not a virgin. Two- the graphic depictions of sex are specific, bold, and refreshingly true. I reread this series whenever I am not feeling as frisky as my husband. It works. It is an aphrodisiac for the brain- a woman's most erotic organ.
